An engaging exploration of the art of collecting and the evolution of one of America’s great university museums. Join renowned public speaker and Christie’s Chairman Emeritus Stephen Lash in conversation with Tsugumi Maki, Director of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) Museum, as they delve into the fascinating 150-year history of collecting at the Rhode Island School of Design.
Located in Providence, the RISD Museum is home to approximately 100,000 works spanning from antiquity to the contemporary era. As the 20th-largest art museum in the United States and the only comprehensive art museum in southeastern New England, its collection encompasses seven curatorial departments representing diverse cultures, artistic traditions, and fields of design.
At its heart, the conversation offers a rare glimpse into how museums build, preserve, and interpret collections—and how 150 years of collecting have shaped the cultural landscape of Rhode Island and beyond.
