DATE Wednesday, May 18, 2011

WHAT National Book Award-winning author Nathaniel Philbrick (“The Heart of the Sea” and “Mayflower”) will give a talk about his latest book, “The Last Stand,” a revealing examination of the legend of Gen. George Armstrong Custer, Sitting Bull, and the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Philbrick delves into the context and realities of Custer’s unexpected defeat at the hands of his Native American enemies under Sitting Bull. While both men professed to want peace on the eve of battle, neither pursued it and the result was what can only be called a massacre. Philbrick takes the reader step-by-step through the events of that fateful day in 1876 to try and determine what really happened.
Philbrick will speak from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the River Room at Latitude 41 Restaurant & Pub at Mystic Seaport.
