Tickets available for “Laughter is the Best Medicine”
hope valley: Tickets are on sale now for the 2012 edition of the popular Wood River Health Services spring fundraiser comedy night, Laughter Really is the Best Medicine, which last year raised over $12,000 for the health center’s programs and services.
Terry Mellor, a volunteer for the last several years who has been central to the event’s highly successful auctions, has taken on the job of Chairwoman this year.
“The work that Wood River Health does is so important, especially now with the economy in so much trouble and healthcare costs so high,” Mellor said. “I think we are incredibly lucky to have a health center right here in the area, and we all need to do whatever we can to support it and help them do their job.”
The event, to be held April 28 at the Westerly Armory, starting at 6:30 pm, this year will feature the “charismatic comedy magic” of Matt Roberts, a full-time professional performer with a unique combination of skills as an actor, illusionist, host/mc, puppeteer, and of course, comedian, who leaves a lasting impression on audiences.
Matt has been as a guest on NBC'sToday Show, has been a creative collaborator with The Jim Henson Company, and has worked on special projectsfor Boston's Symphony Halland PBS, but is best known in southern New England as the host and producer of All Things Connecticut on CPTV, The Power of Giving series sponsored by the Newman's Own Foundation, and the Mohegan Sun Arena’s on-court master of ceremonies for the WNBA'sConnecticut Sun.
Dinner for the event has always been a worthwhile experience all its own – from the Taste of Westerly in previous years to the Pasta Challenge last year and this year is no exception as last year’s Challenge winner, Casa Della Luce, caters the entire event, serving the award-winning pork-stuffed ravioli in truffle sauce. Owner and Chef Mark Lacz will also provide a live cooking demonstration before the meal.
The evening will also include a wine tasting by Wildwood Liquors of Richmond and live and silent auctions providing a wide range of items from local businesses, as well as several vacation get-aways.
Sponsors for Laughter Really is the Best Medicine include NewportFed, Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island, Marshall and Sterling Insurance, The Washington Trust and Janell Hayes Bruno.
