Flowers, Birds & Critters, Grrrr...Description
“Flowers, Birds & Critters, Grrrr…” - Featured Artists Patty Nunes and Mimi Huszer-Fagnant.
Spring surrounds us, and the pleasures of summer are on the doorstep. Lovers of art, nature, and everything life-affirming are invited to celebrate the season at the opening of “Flowers, Birds, and Critters, Grrrr…” Friday, June 5, 5-8 PM at the Artists’ Cooperative Gallery of Westerly. Floral interpretations of selected works of art created by members of the Ocean Community YMCA Garden Club will also be on display.
On the first Friday in June, featured artists Patty Nunes and Mimi Huszer-Fagnant will present their unique interpretations of the gifts of nature.
Patty Nunes began painting as a child with the encouragement of her father – a fisherman and mill worker as well as an artist – who helped her understand color and how to bring drawings alive with shading and tone. A teacher for 28 years, Patty has never stopped creating art and has continually developed the soft and distinctive style we so admire today. These days, Patty enjoys the freedom to pursue her art full time. She says she feels lucky to have had two work experiences in her life that feed the soul. “Timing is everything!” Patty’s watercolors depict her appreciation of nature – its colors and creatures. Inspiration for her watercolors comes from photographs of the places she loves.
Transforming simple colored glass rods into richly-patterned, shaped and textured beads takes much more than a steady hand and a passion for fire. Mimi Huszer –Fagnant has honed her talent for making these tiny glass sculptures for more than ten years with dazzling results. In addition to jewelry, Mimi’s lampwork creations are used in fairy gardens, mobiles, ornaments and sun-catchers. To complement her lampwork, Mimi also creates delicate blown glass flower pendants, one of which was selected for the juror’s award in the craft category at the Gallery’s Regional Exhibition in May of this year.
Art lovers are also reminded to sharpen their bidding strategies for July’s 10th annual Silent Auction of art, experiences, and items donated by over 75 area businesses. A striking Chinese brush painting by Gale Loch on view at the Gallery beginning on June 5, will be raffled off during the Gala Reception at the Industrial Trust Building on July 18 from 5-7. The silent auction will be followed by a live auction ending at 8 PM.
The Artist’s Cooperative Gallery of Westerly is located at 7 Canal Street in downtown Westerly, RI. The Gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday 11AM to 7PM and Sunday, 1-5PM. Please call 401-596-2221 or visit www.westerlyart.com or our Facebook page for information about the show, ACGOW, and its artists.
