Denison Pequotsepos Wild Mushroom Fes...Description
Mushroom Festival at the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center Offers Fun, Foraging and Lots of Fungi
Mystic, CT(September 13, 2012) The Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center (DPNC) will celebrate the season, flavors and mystique of mushrooms at the 11th annual Wild Mushroom Festival on Sunday, September 30, 2012 from 2 to 5 p.m. The festival is held on the grounds of the Nature Center and will offer guided forays into the woods lead by fungi experts from the CT Valley Mycological Society to identify local specimens.
Mushroom hunting is not the only highlight for this uniquely flavored event. There’s also live bluegrass music and the culinary delights of mushroom inspired dishes prepared by talented chefs from the creative kitchens that define our area as a destination for fine cuisine. Some of this year’s participants donating their time, skills and presentations include Bridge Restaurant, Daniel Packer Inne, Drawbridge Ice Cream, Gourmet Galley Catering with the Extra Virgin Olive Store, Kate’s Café, Latitude 41, Mystic Soup Company, Pizza Grille, RiverWalk Restaurant, Water Street Café and more. Locally produced beverages will also be available for sampling.
And if you’re really into fungi, bring in your own strange and wonderful find from foraging for the experts to identify or confirm and compare your findings with a huge display collected by the experts. Bill Yule, naturalist and educator from the CT River Museum and CT Valley Mycological chapter member will lead a presentation on the “weird, wacky and wonderful” world of mushrooms.
Tickets to the Wild Mushroom are on sale now for $12.50 for DPNC members and $15 for non-members and the event is held rain or shine. Four food tickets are included with the price of admission. Additional food tickets may be purchased after admission for $1 each. Proceeds from the festival support environmental and educational programming at the Nature Center.
The festival is made possible through the generosity of the participants and sponsorships. Citizens Bank, the Connecticut Valley Mycological Society and McQuade’s Marketplace are this year’s event sponsors and proudly support the efforts and mission of DPNC.
Since 1946, the Nature Center has provided visitors and the community with experiential science programs that further the Center’s mission: to inspire and nurture appreciation and scientific understanding of the natural world and foster a personal environmental ethic. The Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center serves 50,000 people each year with environmental science programs. Made possible through the generosity and commitment of the Denison Homestead, the Nature Center is a private, not-for-profit organization funded by admission fees, memberships and contributions. With 10 miles of trails, live animals, and a natural history museum, the Nature Center provides many rewarding recreational and educational opportunities.
