Press Release:
How does an artist make a thought concrete? How do we connect our interior world to the world outside? How do we create from our heart?
“The Connecticut College Student Exhibition/Heart of the Artist,” opening Feb. 2 from 5-8 PM at the Artists’ Cooperative Gallery of Westerly, reflects the ways artists use visual information, technique and form to express themselves and communicate ideas in today’s complex, visually sophisticated culture. Work on display will rangefrom painting and photography to sculpture, artist’s books and video.
With pen and ink, artist Kelsey Nickerson creates her own visual language as she maps the contours of her own movements through time. In watercolors, Hannah Plishtin explores the connections between language and the female experience. “I aim to unearth that which is unexpressed,” says the artist, “connecting her interior and exterior realities.” Printmaker Gabriella Salvatore says, “The process of making something has always been very satisfying for me because I like to see how my thoughts and creativity can materialize into a concrete object…When making art the possibilities are infinite, I like that there are no right or wrong answers.“
“Students work one-on-one with faculty who are also professional artists with national and international profiles in their fields,” says artist and Associate Professor of Art Pamela Marks, organizer of the student exhibit. “Through these close relationships, students gain exposure to a variety of artistic philosophies and professional practices. Areas of study include drawing, painting, printmaking, design studies, photography, sculpture and ceramics.” About the program, Professor Marks continues, “The Art Department at Connecticut College strives to fully engage their students in a broad interdisciplinary and international studio experience. The majority of students study abroad one semester. Students are expected to balance and integrate their study of art to their other courses and the larger world.”
Februrary’s show also displays artist’s favorite work in a variety of media by ACGOW members.
Back Room Art Gallery (BRAG)
Also on view this month, the Back Room Art Gallery (BRAG) features a show of 2D and 3D art created by Westerly High School students taught by John Tedeschi and Judy McAndrew. Visitors are invited to attend a special Opening Reception Sunday, Feb. 10, from 2-4 PM. Light refreshments will be served. From ceramics and pottery to charcoal self-portraits and complex perspective illustrations, the show reflects the diverse talents of students ranging from freshmen newly introduced to art to seniors with greater experience. Ceramics and pottery are taught by Judy McAndrew, and drawing and painting by John Tedeschi, who began teaching at Westerly High School this year. About his students, Mr. Tedeschi says, “I’m really happy with their commitment, their creativity, and their passion for art.” The show runs through March 2.
“Heart of the Artist” opens as part of the monthly first Wednesday night Art Stroll held in downtown Westerly and Pawcatuck, when shops, galleries and restaurants will be open.
