PRESS RELEASE:
Texture makes canvas rough. Ice cream irresistible. And brings poetry to life.
At a very special event on Friday, April 22 at 5:30 PM, the Artist’s Cooperative Gallery of Westerly is proud to host a poetry reading by Rhode Island’s Poet Laureate, Lisa Starr. As the perfect highlight for the end of April’s show, “Scratching the Surface-Texture,” the artist will reveal how a poet weaves texture with words and images.
About texture, Starr says “In fact, I don't have much use for poetry if it doesn't have texture--a skinned knee, some spinach between the teeth...in other words--it has to be embodied, somehow.” Her poetry captures not only the physical textures of life, nature and the places she loves, but the unseen textures as well – of joy, surprise, and the spirit.
Innkeeper, mother, bartender, teacher and founder and director of the nationally acclaimed Block Island Poetry Project, now in its 8th year, Starr currently divides her time among a number of interests, her children, and her passion for poetry. As well as between Block Island and Westerly, RI, where she now spends several days a week. As Poet Laureate, Starr has established writing circles among student and elderly communities throughout the state. In 2009, she created “Poetry for Hope,” a 5-day series of readings, workshops and public forums featuring over a dozen visiting U.S. State Poets Laureate and Rhode Island poets and musicians. The poet is also a two-time recipient of the R.I. Fellowship for Poetry. Her third collection of poems, Mad With Yellow, was published in September 2008. When time permits, she writes her heart out.
Doors will be open at 5:00 PM - the reading and discussion will begin promptly at 5:30 PM. Light refreshments will be served.
Ongoing show at the Artists Cooperative Gallery:
“Scratching the Surface-Texture” explores texture on many levels. Featured artist Patty Nunes creates it with color and brush strokes. Jewelry artist Kristie Foss sculpts it with polymer and precious metal clay. And in Pete Ogle’s vivid stained glass work, light plays with it, and the colors that glow beneath its surface. The show also features work by other member artists in paintings, pottery, photographs, glass, fabric and sculpture. And, as always at the Artists’ Cooperative, shopping is tax-free.
The Artists’ Cooperative Gallery of Westerly is located at 7 Canal Street in downtown Westerly, RI. The Gallery is open from 10AM to 5PM from Tuesday through Saturday, or by chance. Please call 401-596-2221 with any questions, and visit www.westerlyarts.com for information about the show, ACGOW and its artists.
