Flood Benefit at the Knick

 

Town Councilor Caswell Cooke has organized this event so that fifty percent of the revenue from ticket sales after expenses will go to the Johnnycake Center of Westerly to aid the victims of the flood.  

  

What would you do if you started one of the hottest rock n’ roll bands in the 70s? Ride the gravy train of fortune, fame and fawning groupies? Or leave it all behind and forge your own path as an independent musician?

  

David Knopfler co-founded the classic rock group Dire Straits, and recorded three albums along with his brother Mark, touring the stadium circuit extensively, before resigning three years later to follow his own path of independent, singer-songwriter. For more than two decades he’s faithfully pursued his musical vision, writing and producing his own music on several critically acclaimed solo CDs.

  

Ship of Dreams, David’s latest album, co-produced with Harry Bogdanovs, features guest appearances by Chris Rea and Alan Clark (Dire Straits) among others. In addition to producing several scores for film and TV projects, David’s first book of poetry entitled "Blood Stones and Rhythmic Beasts" was released last year.

  

 David Knopfler has been fortunate enough to reach a wide audience without compromising his art. While he’s enjoyed the respect and admiration of his musical peers, widespread critical acclaim, international awards and worldwide chart successes, he lives quietly in the English countryside, notching up an impressive list of writing credits.

  

An understated integrity and honesty define Knopfler in both his work and private life. A lifelong member of organizations like Greenpeace and Amnesty International, David has always made uncompromising life choices. "I don’t regard what I do as remotely glamorous. I write and record music because I completely love doing it, despite any so called ‘celebrity status’ that sometimes comes with the job."

  

David Knopfler, along with his longtime musical partner Harry Bogdanovs, are doing a very select handful of dates in the U.S. this spring.
