April 18, 6 pm
Join us for an intimate evening of dinner and conversation celebrating the exuberant life and appetite of Ludwig Bemelmans—artist, bon vivant, and intrepid traveler. Dubbed “the original bad boy of the New York hotel and restaurant subculture” by the late chef and author Anthony Bourdain, Bemelmans lived as creatively as he wrote and painted.
Hilary Pierce, Curator of The Bemelmans Gallery at Ocean House, will give a lively illustrated talk tracing Bemelmans’ favorite meals and legendary dining rooms—from classic 20th-century New York restaurants and supper clubs to his own Parisian bistro La Colombe, with the gallery featuring the original Bemelmans murals. Hilary will draw inspiration from her study of Bemelmans books and his essays for Town & Country and The New Yorker. This special evening will reveal a beloved author for whom food, art, and travel were inseparable pleasures. Ocean House will serve a thoughtfully crafted three-course dinner inspired by Bemelmans’ writings and short stories—an indulgent homage to his wit, wanderlust, and enduring love of the table.
