CHRIST CHURCH CHOIR TO HOLD ITS 96th MAY BREAKFAST
PROCEEDS BENEFIT MUSIC CAMP FOR CHILDREN OF CHOIR
AND CHORUS OF WESTERLY
Continuing one of Rhode Island’s oldest and most popular traditions,
the Choir of Christ Church, Westerly, invites the general public to join them at their 96th annual
May Breakfast on Saturday, May 1, 2010 from 7 AM to 10 AM. This special breakfast
(which features a menu of homemade buttermilk pancakes, sausage, bacon, eggs made
to order, muffins, fruit, juice, coffee, and tea) will take place in the Christ Church
Parish Hall at 7 Elm Street in downtown Westerly.
The Christ Church Choir’s May Breakfast has been a tradition in Westerly for nearly
one hundred years. Over that time, countless numbers have passed through Christ
Church’s doors for what many consider a townwide celebration of springtime. Because
the event is sponsored by the renowned Christ Church Choir, proceeds from the breakfast
are directed towards the community’s singing culture. In particular, the May Breakfast helps
fund a special week-long music camp for the children of the choir and the children of the
Chorus of Westerly. This camp, held each August, is led by George Kent
(organist/choirmaster at Christ Church and music director at the Chorus of Westerly)
and is vital in teaching area children the importance of singing great works of music.
Since the summer camp program began over 50 years ago, more than 1,000 area
children have been able to attend the camp now held at Ogontz in New Hampshire’s White Mountains.
