SUMMARY:Land Trust Turkey Trot at Ninigret NWR and Potato Point\, Charlestown
DESCRIPTION:Join the Westerly Land Trust on our free-guided trail walks on Thursday mornings. We will visit various local conservation properties\, including some of our Westerly Land Trust preserves. Walks are between 1 to 3 hours and are open to all ages with our target group being agile seniors. Please keep in mind that these are wooded trails with stumps\, roots and rocks so be sure to wear hiking boots or good walking shoes. Be aware that our hikes leave promptly\, so please arrive on time.\n\n\n\nFriday\, November 27\, 10:00 AM Turkey Trot @ Ninigret NWR and Potato Point\, Charlestown\n\n \n\nIt's the Friday after Thanksgiving and all of the food has been eaten what is there to do next? How about a walk at Ninigret NWR and Potato Point. Join Volunteer Sally Hanson and Roe LaBossiere from The Charlestown Land Trust for a great wildlife walk around the Refuge and Ninigret Pond. Maybe you'll get lucky and catch a glimpse of a turkey that survived the holiday! Ninigret: This is a flat easy walk over grassy trails and old runways from the former Charlestown Naval Auxiliary Landing Field to Grassy Point on Ninigret Pond\, the largest coastal salt pond in RI. It'll be about 4 miles total. Hundreds of species of birds have been recorded at this refuge. Potato Point is a 60+ acre cut corn field & meadow peninsula on Ninigret Pond. By special arrangement\, this Charlestown Land Trust and DEM easement protected private compound is very unique property. It is an easy short walk over rolling meadow adjacent to "Hawk Ness" a private links golf course. Meet at the West Entrance off Rte 1 South. (The Refuge is South of Ninigret Park and has a separate entrance.) From the Refuge we will caravan to Potato Point. \n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE:\n\nInclement weather cancels and if in doubt\, contact leader. \n\nIf the weather is icy you should bring stabilizers or something for traction. If a lot of snow bring snowshoes. \n\nFLUORESCENT ORANGE REQUIREMENTS:\n\nIn State Management areas everyone is required to wear 200 square inches of solid daylight fluorescent orange from the second Saturday in September to the last day of February and the last Thursday in April to the last day in May\, annually. However\, 500 sq. inch by all hunters (including archers) and all users of management areas and undeveloped state parks during all portions of shotgun deer seasons.
