3,000+ residents, school children, volunteers, business leaders, Misquamicut business owners, state officials, military, political leaders, etc. will gather along the entire stretch of Misquamicut shoreline, holding hands in a symbolic gesture to show we are united after months of recovery efforts. From the Pleasant View Inn to the Westerly Town Beach, we will line the beach. Many participants will wear their “Bring Back the Beach” t-shirts and hoodies. A helicopter will fly by and record this activity. A brief speaking program will take place and be broadcast live on WBLQ with participants singing one song as a group-probably the national anthem. A free commemorative item will be given to everyone who attends.
In the 2 weeks leading up to this event, Westerly school children will learn about the ocean and the challenges of living in a shoreline community at school. Educational programs will be provided by The JASON Project, managed by Sea Research foundation, an internationally recognized science program for middle-school students and an affiliate of National Geographic Society. JASON was started in 1989 by oceanographer and explorer Dr. Robert D. Ballard, and has connected over 11 million students with scientists through classroom learning experiences and hands-on exploration. Save the Bay will also provide classroom instruction on the topic. A Westerly field trip to the beach will bring some of the kids to participate in Hands Along the Sands on May 17. Hands Along the Sands is co-sponsored by The Greater Westerly-Pawcatuck Area Chamber of Commerce, Save The Bay, Mystic Aquarium and Town of Westerly.
